Distinguished and Famous people from Murchison

🌿 David and Frances Pollock

David and Frances Pollock made Wooleen Station a nationally discussed experiment in pastoral land management. David took over management in 2007, pursuing the regeneration of country affected by overgrazing. Their work combined changes to grazing pressure with tourism, allowing visitors to encounter both the landscape and the arguments about its future. David also published The Wooleen Way in 2019. Their use of dingoes in managing grazing pressure attracted debate among pastoralists, so it should not be described as an uncontested solution. In February 2026 they announced plans to sell Wooleen. Their substantial contribution to the Murchison remains the years spent testing and explaining a different approach to station country.

🐑 Frank Wittenoom

Frank Wittenoom was associated with the development of Murgoo, one of the Murchison district’s early pastoral stations. Leases in the area were taken up in the 1870s as an extension of the Wittenoom brothers’ work at Yuin; the first building on the present Murgoo site followed in 1879. The property history places him within the practical expansion of pastoral holdings, with water, stock and transport determining what could be attempted. These were colonial enterprises on Aboriginal Country, rather than the beginning of the landscape’s human history. Murgoo gives the shire a documented connection with a family prominent in Western Australian pastoral and public life.
